# Spoken English — Team & Client English

A self-study spoken-English workspace for **running daily stand-ups with a dev team, meeting customers, and everyday conversation**. Every lesson is a single interactive HTML page — audio playback, auto-graded quizzes, word-order builders, sentence-stress widgets and **microphone drills that score your speech** — and it all works in a phone browser.

**Start here:** [`index.html`](index.html) — the hub, built for phone screens.

## Lessons so far

| 003 | [Native Rhythm](lessons/0003-native-rhythm.html) | Sentence stress, weak forms + schwa, linking, flap T, general vocabulary |

Reference sheets (printable): [First 60 seconds](reference/first-60-seconds-cheatsheet.html) · [Stand-up & team English](reference/standup-and-team-english.html) · [Native rhythm & grammar terms](reference/native-rhythm-and-grammar-terms.html) · [10-minute routine & benchmark](reference/pronunciation-routine-and-benchmark.html)

## How the workspace is organised

| Path | What it holds |
|---|---|
| `index.html` | Phone-friendly hub: links to every lesson, reference sheet and file |
| `lessons/` | The lessons — the main unit of teaching |
| `reference/` | Printable cheat sheets and the grammar/pronunciation term index |
| `assets/` | Shared components: `lesson.css` and `speak.js` (TTS, mic drills, quizzes, stress widget) |
| `MISSION.md` | Why this is being learned — every lesson traces back to it |
| `GLOSSARY.md` | Canonical grammar and pronunciation terms |
| `RESOURCES.md` | Curated, annotated sources (knowledge) and communities (wisdom) |
| `NOTES.md` | Teaching preferences, the 5 strands, curriculum roadmap, pronunciation track |
| `learning-records/` | Decision-grade insights that steer future sessions |
| `recordings/` | Weekly benchmark recordings — **local only, never committed** |

## Use it on your phone

1. Deploy once (see [DEPLOY.md](DEPLOY.md)) and open the Vercel URL on the phone. `index.html` is the hub.
2. **Add to Home Screen** — Chrome (Android): menu → *Add to Home screen*; Safari (iOS): Share → *Add to Home Screen*. It then opens like an app.
3. **Microphone drills need HTTPS.** Vercel provides it free, so the drills work on the phone; on a laptop, run a local server instead:
 ```
 cd spoken-english-learning
 python -m http.server 8080
 ```
 and open `http://localhost:8080/index.html`.
4. "Hear it" buttons use the phone's built-in English voice. If it sounds robotic, install a **Google / US English** voice in the phone's language settings.
5. All practice state lives in the printable log on each reference sheet — paper still works better for spaced repetition.

## Privacy notes

- `recordings/` (your voice) and the client deliverables (`PRODUCT_CATALOG.md`, the Zaira `.docx` / `.pdf`) are **excluded by `.gitignore`** — they stay on your laptop.
- `MISSION.md` and `NOTES.md` name your employer and one client project. If this repository is **public**, make it **private** (Settings → General → Change visibility) or tell your tutor to genericise those names.

## Deploy

Static site, no build step. Vercel: Framework Preset **Other**, Build Command **empty**, Output Directory **`.`**. Full steps in [DEPLOY.md](DEPLOY.md).
